Dear Willie:
Just a brief note to express my thanks for the instruction, patience, and skill you shared with me last week during the Basic Keelboat Certification Course. I had one goal in taking the course and that was to regain lost confidence in my sailing skills. Your instruction not only helped me achieve that objective but also to re-learn many lessons I had long ago forgotten, to gain new insights in boat handling, safety, points of sail, and sail trim. The combination of spending time reviewing coursework in the morning and then putting those lessons into practice on the water in the afternoon was a magical combination for me. The learning atmosphere you created helped me not only understand the theory but, equally as important, helped me put it into practice getting knowledge from my head to my fingertips!
You have entitled your company the “Fun Maritime Academy.” It is a moniker that well portrays what life is like in your classroom and on the water. As you could tell, I really enjoyed your teaching methods, your wonderful enthusiasm for sailing, and the fun you built into each of our lessons. I shall remember as long as I live coming down from the Marina to find the boat for which I was responsible floating in the middle of the harbor and watching you laugh until you cried at some of my irreverent and profane responses to the requests you made during my final exam on Lake Monroe. Yes, I learned a lot and had much fun doing so!
I have had the privilege of sitting under some good instructors during my four years of undergraduate and three years of graduate school. As I shared with you, you are one of the top two professors I ever have had! Thank you for sharing so much of yourself, your knowledge and love of sailing, and for making the whole experience so much fun!
I’ll be calling shortly after the first of the year to learn more about enrolling in your Advanced Sailing Course.
